Students from the inaugural ArtAcademy class organized by Silvermine and STAR, Inc. celebrated their first spring session with an exhibition of artwork in the School of Art Gallery. Family members, students, prospective students, and Silvermine and STAR staff members gathered to view the works of art at a reception on Thursday, April 18.

The exhibit will run through May 15 in the Anne Connell Gallery.

Teaching Artist Wendy MacCordy addressed the group and congratulated them on their projects and willingness to experiment with various materials. She noted that a favorite part of the program was the conclusion of each class, when participants spoke about their work to the rest of the group. Anne Connell, Director of the Silvermine School of Art, handed out certificates of achievement to mark the completion of a wide variety of projects including painting, sculpture and collage. A second session of ArtAcademy will conclude in June.

As reported previously in a press release dated April 2, the ArtAcademy program, created by Silvermine in partnership with STAR, Inc., received a grant from the Connecticut Office of the Arts under its ARTE-accesible grant program. Initial funding was provided by The Horizon Foundation and the Sidney Weiner Memorial Scholarship Fund. The program brings adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) to the Silvermine campus to immerse themselves in a variety of art classes in an inclusive setting.

Participants enjoy making art in fully equipped studios, with “art buddies” assisting and encouraging inclusivity. ArtAcademy brings students into a new environment and allows them to meet new friends and develop new skills in the art studio, fostering a community that is respectful of the diverse talents and abilities of all people while also recognizing the achievements of individuals with special needs.
