MILFORD, CT - Boys & Girls Village (BGV) recently received $31,000 from the Werth Family Foundation to support the purchase of equipment for the organization’s upcoming Life Skills and Vocational Training Center, which will provide programs to help at-risk youth develop the life, financial and job skills they need to become economically self-sufficient as they become adults.
Boys & Girls Village is a statewide leader in providing mental health treatment, permanency planning and educational services to Connecticut’s most vulnerable youth and their families. In recent years, the organization has been investing in the well-being of older youth, with a focus on increasing programming to build the skills they’ll need to enter early adulthood.
The funding received will support the purchase, in part, of a Computer Numerical Control (CNC) router. The machine will teach students how to use design software and computer-driven machinery–essential knowledge for a career in modern manufacturing. It will also provide real-life applications of algebra, geometry and other math and science principles.
“We’re grateful to the Werth Family Foundation for their ongoing commitment to advancing our students’ skills as we prepare them to become working adults,” said Dr. Steven Kant, CEO of Boys & Girls Village. “With this equipment, we will provide an introduction to vocational choices and better their chances for future economic self-sufficiency.”
In addition to providing initial training in manufacturing, BGV plans to provide technical training in the areas of culinary arts and automotive repair, as well as programming to help develop the life and financial skills that at-risk youth are often lacking.
“Adolescence is a critical period of self-development with significant impacts on adult well-being,” said Kant. “We want to provide a foundation that helps at-risk youth improve their chances for making positive choices, and acquire the skills they’ll need to move forward on a path toward independence.”
BGV’s Life Skills and Vocational Training Center will be completed in the summer of next year. The building was made possible thanks to a grant from the State of Connecticut, and a groundbreaking celebration will take place on Friday, November 15th at 11:30am. The public is cordially invited to attend, and refreshments will be served, proudly presented by the organization’s youth-run business, Meatball Heaven.
