Southport, CT - Pequot Library’s annual Midwinter Book Sale is the little sister of the Library’s nationally known Summer Book Sale; it’s smaller but more intimate, with many treasures and bargains to be found. The dates and hours are Saturday, February 16-Sunday February 17, 2019 from 9:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. daily.

Admission is free. All sale proceeds support Pequot Library’s annual programs for adults and children, serving thousands of participants a year. Pequot’s book sales also provide affordable books, CDs, DVDs, and LPs for the town; materials for underserved neighboring public school systems; and great volunteer opportunities for the community.

Categories and Specialty items include Fiction/Classics, Biography, LPs, History, Children, CDs/DVDs/Media, Mystery, Cookbooks, Signed Books, and Vintage Magazines. Additional categories include books on Gardening and Golf.

There will be how-to gardening books on vegetables, flowers, and gardens as well as beautiful coffee table garden books, many donated to the sale by members of the Greens Farms, Fairfield, and Sasqua Garden Clubs. Mary Lou McGuire, New York Botanical Garden-trained landscape designer, and Pequot Library volunteer, says, “This is the best time of year to buy gardening books as we are dreaming about our spring gardens.”

Enjoy live blues music while browsing and buying books! On Saturday and Sunday from 1:00 to 2:30 p.m. Mark Naftalin & Friends will host a live musical broadcast, which will air on Bridgeport’s WPKN (89.5 FM) and stream on wpkn.org.

Led by Naftalin a renowned blues pianist and Rock & Roll Hall of Famer, the Friends are an ensemble of (mostly) Fairfield County-based blues and jazz musicians. This year’s broadcasts, their 13th annual appearance at the book sale, will feature singing guitarists Paul Gabriel and J.D. Seem; singing harmonicists Manny Foglio (of the Mojomatics) and Mark Zaretsky (of the Cobalt Rhythm Kings); from Otis & The Hurricanes, guitarist-vocalist Chris “Otis” Cross and pianist-accordionist-vocalist Smokin’ Joe Najmy; sax master Crispin Cioe (of the Uptown Horns); guitarist-vocalist-harmonicist Daniel J (“The Modern Bluesman”); and frottoirist-percussionist-vocalist Peter Menta, aka Washboard Slim (of Washboard Slim & the Bluelights). Joining Naftalin in the rhythm section will be bassists David Anastasia, David “Bobo” Lavorgna, and Rich Zurkowski, and, on drums and percussion, Matt Moadel and Barry Urich.

For the live WPKN broadcast, Naftalin will play piano solos on the Library’s extraordinary Steinway concert grand piano.

(Snow Day: If Ol’ Man Winter causes the Library to be closed on Saturday or Sunday, the Book Sale will resume on Monday, February 18, 2019.)

Media sponsor and broadcasting live from Pequot Library both days: WPKN 89.5 FM The Real Alternative.
