Southport, CT – Joyce Grasso, the Stamford-based artist who won Pequot Library’s 2018 juried art show, Wet Paint, will be showing her work in a solo exhibition at the Library starting September 6, 2019. Each year, Pequot Library accepts over 100 works to its juried art show, which is entering its 22nd year. Grasso’s show, Coastal Expressions, features abstract seascapes the artist describes as creating a “feeling of place” with “bold colors, multiple layers and varied textures.” This exhibition also highlights Grasso’s mixed media collages with hand-painted acrylic papers on cradleboard. An opening reception for the exhibition is planned for September 5, 2019 from 6:30 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. at Pequot Library.

The acrylic works on canvas, with their broad, bright, colorful strokes, imbue coastal serenity inspired by Ms. Grasso’s Maine upbringing. “The sounds of waves breaking and the din of distant foghorns were part of my everyday existence in Maine,” the artist told Portland Art Gallery’s periodical, Off the Wall. “That simple beauty saturated my soul.”

Ms. Grasso began her art education in her Maine high school studio class, going on to study at the International Center for Photography in New York City, the Silvermine School of Art in New Canaan, and the Greenwich Art Society. She holds a master’s degree with a 6th year certificate in art education. Now in her second career as a working artist, Ms. Grasso began as an elementary school art teacher and strives to embody the same “playful and fearless approach” that she has seen in her young students.

“It was our honor to award Joyce Grasso as Best in Show for our 2018 Art Show,” said Caroline Crawford, who manages the show. “Her winning painting in last year's Art Show was chosen out of 150 curated works of art. Ms. Grasso's dramatic use of colors and shapes creates lyrical and beautiful works and we are proud to present Coastal Expressions this fall."

Joyce Grasso: Coastal Expressions will be on display at the Pequot Library from September 6th through October 6, 2019. There will be an opening reception with an artist talk and light refreshments on Thursday, September 5th from 6:30 – 8:00 p.m. This event is free and open to the public.
